2020 Breeding Schedule

and New Arrivals

PLEASE NOTE:  This page is a continuous work in progress and breeding partners may be switched right up to the day of breeding.

Kids will be added to the KID PAGE as they arrive; all remaining available kids will also be posted on the

FOR SALE page.

Sunset Knoll reserves all rights at first selection for each kidding and will be determined after kidding.   Sunset Knoll also reserves the right to cancel any sale or reservation at any time.

All due dates are approximate!

Reservations:

Reservations are FREE until kids are born.  Below are my breeding plans and match-ups; feel free to take a peek and pick your favorite dam/sire.  I always recommend placing a back up choice as I cannot predict or guarantee the number/gender of kids born.  Once you've selected the breeding(s) you'd like a kid from, let me know and I'll mark you down on that list.  Wethers have a separate first come, first served list (no need to select a breeding pair first).

After a kid is born I will notify you of it's availability.  You will have 48 hours to confirm that you want that kid and then a non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to hold a kid (or $50 per wether).  If I do not hear back from you and/or do not receive your deposit I will assume you are no longer interested and move on to the next person.  The remainder of the balance will be due at the time of pick up once the kid is weaned (at approximately 12 weeks old), otherwise the reservation deposit will be forfeited.

Deposits may be transferred to another goat if one becomes available that you prefer.  Deposits can also be carried forward to another year if a kid of your choosing was not available and you still prefer a kid from a particular doe.  Deposits are refunded if the kid dies before pickup, we have determined the kid unfit for sale, or if we choose to cancel the sale.

Registration:

All doelings will be sold already registered with the ADGA and a Certificate of Registration will be provided with the animal at the time you pick him/her up.  Most bucklings will be sold as unregistered wethers.  Occasionally we may have a buckling worthy of keeping in tact.  We choose these bucklings based on proven mammary systems, pedigrees behind the buckling, and the conformation of sire, dam and buckling.  For this reason, bucklings from first fresheners will be wethered.  First fresheners still have some maturing to do in order to know if their genetics are consistent and worthy of being passed on through a buck.  If you are interested in a buck from a particular breeding pair, please contact me.  If you are considering the purchase of an intact buck, a deposit will be due prior to castration so don't delay!  Castration typically occurs between 10 and 12 weeks of age.

Health:

We test our animals annually through Washington Animal Disease Diagnositc Labratory (WADDL at WSU) for CL, CAE and Johne's Disease and continually receive negative results for those diseases.  All kids sold will be disbudded, be up to date on their CD&T vaccinations, and have their hooves trimmed.   The herd is dewormed on an "as needed" basis and kids receive regular prevention for coccidia.  Animals will be healthy at time of pick-up however, because we can not control the stress of travel and the animal’s management and/or environment after it leaves our care, we can not offer further health guarantees after leaving the farm.

Weaning:

The weaning process begins at about 10 weeks of age to ensure kids are ready for their new homes at 12 weeks old.  Wethers may take just a little longer as we make sure the healing process from being castrated is well under way.

Payment:

Cash and PayPal are welcomed for deposits and/or final payments; personal checks are not accepted.

Pricing:

Wethers are $125/ea or $200/pair.  Doelings and bucklings start at $300.00.  Pricing varies depending on sire's and dam's accomplishments and conformation (see chart below for breakdown).  Single goat purchases only to homes that already have goats.  A companion wether can be purchased with any doeling for $100, pending availability.

Guidelines for a good home:

As cute and cuddly as kids are, they do require time and commitment on your part.

  • As mentioned, goats are herd animals and we require that they have a buddy, preferably of a similar age and size.

  • A securely fenced yard of adequate size where the goats will have plenty of room to run and play. Exercise is critical for maintaining appropriate weight.  Goats love to climb and to get onto things, many people offer large used cable spools, build decks or old children's play structures for their goats to play on.

  • A sturdy draft-free shelter to provide protection from harsh weather and predators, with fresh bedding of straw or shavings. It is essential to the health of the goats that the bedding be cleaned out and replenished frequently.

  • A properly balanced diet is imperative to maintain good health. This includes a feed ration specifically formulated for dairy goats, good quality leafy hay (such as 2nd/3rd cutting Orchard Grass or Timothy - alfalfa is a great source of nutrition for does in milk), and lots of fresh water.  Clean, fresh water; mineral supplements; and hay should be available "free-choice" at all times.

  • A yearly visit by a veterinarian for a well check and annual injections of CD/T and Bo-Se (if you are uncomfortable injecting these yourself).

  • Regular hoof trimming (every 4 to 6 weeks).  Proper hoof care reduces the risk of injuries and helps prevent diseases like laminitis and foot rot.

  • Parasite Control (Deworming) - We strongly recommend having fecal tests performed at least once each year. Parasites can become resistant to dewormers and the fecal test will show whether or not you need to use a different product to treat whatever parasites are indicated.  Veterinarians offer fecal testing but there are also some online resources that are often offered at a more economical rate than many veterinarians.  Feel free to contact me for those references.

Receiving your new bundle of joy:

I do not ship, however I am willing to meet you or deliver within a couple of hours for a reasonable fee; otherwise local pick up only.

Notes:  Hallie's 5th freshening.  I originally attempted to breed Hallie to Camanna CB Chocolate Moose VVE86 @ 2-06 (who is owned by a dear friend, Leelyn) but she short-cycled a week after returning home & most likely she didn't settle.  My back-up plan is this breeding to Monty who brings a lot to the table and I'm hoping he will improve upon rump, teat placement/size, udder height/attachment and milk production.  Hallie did not come back into heat when expected and has most likely settled.

Notes:  Marigold's 5th freshening.  Both Huron and Marigold are lovely examples of dairy character with excellent pedigrees and wonderful mammary systems behind them; I expect to see the same in the kids from this cross.  Marigold has never had more than 2 kids per litter and I do intend to retain some.

Notes:  Maggie's 1st freshening.  I'm anxious to see Magnolia's udder as she comes from a long line of 'E' mammaries and from my heaviest milker (SG The Solway Farm Marigold).  Ron has thrown many kids with lovely dairy character and improves upon udder attachment, teat placement and teat size (although Maggie already has size going for her!).  Update:  Maggie did NOT come back into heat as expected by 1/05 and therefor is likely bred.
